Nissan is sending the Murano crossover to Japan, even though it is built in the United States. This model is one of the brand’s most luxurious crossover SUVs. It shows how global car production is changing in the modern auto industry. More vehicles are now built in one country and sold in another.
This move is possible because of a new trade agreement between the United States and Japan. The agreement allows passenger vehicles made in the US to be sold in Japan without extra testing. This makes the import process faster and easier for automakers. It also opens new opportunities for cross-market car sales.
The Nissan Murano is built in Tennessee and will arrive in Japan early next year. Nissan has not shared full details about the Japanese version yet. However, the US-spec model gives a clear idea of what to expect. It combines strong performance with modern SUV design.
Under the hood, the Murano uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It produces 241 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The crossover also comes with standard all-wheel drive, which improves traction and driving stability.

The Murano is well equipped, even in its base trim level. It includes LED headlights and large 20-inch wheels. Inside, there are dual 12.3-inch displays for infotainment and driver information. The SUV also offers a wireless smartphone charger and heated front seats with leather-like materials.
Nissan’s CEO, Ivan Espinosa, said the company wants to grow its lineup in Japan. He explained that the Murano has received strong feedback from American customers. Buyers like its elegant design and high level of comfort. Nissan believes these qualities will also appeal to Japanese drivers.
This is part of a larger trend in the car industry. Japanese brands are now exporting US-built vehicles back to Japan. Toyota plans to bring models like the Camry, Highlander, and Tundra to its home market. These vehicles offer a different style that reflects American car culture.
Honda is also joining this movement with the Passport TrailSport Elite. This crossover SUV is built in Alabama and will be sold in Japan from 2026. It uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 285 horsepower. This shows that demand for large, powerful SUVs is growing even in markets like Japan.
